KARACHI, Oct 4: Chairman of the National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB), Daniyal Aziz, has expressed the hope that the office of nazims’ alliance would play an active role towards highlighting and solving the problems of people at local level.
The NRB chairman was speaking at the inauguration of the All Sindh Taluka and Town Nazims Alliance (ASTTNA) office here on Saturday evening.
He also expressed the hope that this office would help maintaining a better coordination with the provincial government for the resolution of problems being faced by the common man.
Mr Daniyal observed that the nazims of union, tehsil and district councils had gathered with the sole purpose that the problems of people should be solved at local level and local governments be run in accordance with the rules and regulations.
“They have initiated a right step and the NRB would extend all the required facilities in case any such office is set up in any of the provinces,” he declared.
The NRB chairman was of the view that better training facilities should be made available for nazims and naib nazims while bylaws should also be suggested to improve the working of the councils. There was also the need for exchange of experiences to help bring about improvements, he added.
In case no solution was found to the problems of the masses, he said that the ASTTNA could move to the courts for the cause of people.
He fully supported the suggestion that a convention of local government should be convened in Sindh and all the charters of demands as well as suggestions be looked into and integrated in the national policy. The tentative date for such a convention was Oct 23, he suggested.
Mr Daniyal said that he would extend full support to the alliance as long as it was determined to serve the people and act in accordance with the rules and regulations.
He was confident that in the years ahead the local bodies systems in the country would take firm roots and a demonstration of this would be visible on Oct 23.
The NRB chairman said that he had met Sindh chief secretary here to review the two years’ progress. He pointed out that when the devolution plan was introduced in the country, the nazims faced a number of problems at various levels. However, all those difficulties were being overcome and the confusion was removed gradually, he added.
He said that a consultation process was continued with the provincial governments, chief ministers, governors, MNAs civil bodies, NGOs, DCOs, TMOs, district and tehsil nazims. After the culmination of this process, a report would be compiled, he said.
The report would be placed before a national body, comprising all the chief ministers and governors, which would take decisions after discussions, he added.
The ASTTNA president, Sardar Ghulam Mustafa Khaskheli said that the alliance would not allow this system to fail. He said that there had been progress and a number of development projects had been started and completed under this system.
“There has been a green revolution in the country especially in Sindh because of this system,” he remarked.
Anybody trying to disrupt this system would have to face the masses, who were happy with this system, he said and vowed to cleanse society of the menace of corruption and other ills.
Saddar Town Nazim Farooq Memon Fariya, who is the vice- president of the alliance, also spoke on the occasion.—APP
