KARACHI: Nazims boycott elections: Dist council committees
By Our Correspondent
HYDERABAD, Oct 4: The majority of Nazims from Hyderabad City and Latifabad Taluka boycotted the elections for the post of chairmen of district council committees of different departments on Thursday for “interference by the district Nazim and convener of the council”.
It was learnt by this correspondent that unrest prevailed among these elected representatives who were thinking of tendering their resignations from some committees.
Speaking to this correspondent on the request of anonymity, one member from Latifabad Taluka said that the members witnessed undue interference by the district Nazim as well as the convener in the election of chairmen.
He said that in one case even a woman councillor was elected as chairman of a committee notwithstanding the fact that she was not elected on the committee because she did not file her nomination.
He said that it was a mockery of the rules of business of the house and the Sindh Local Government Ordinance 2001.
He pointed out that illegalities and irregularities were committed in the process of election.
Out of 18 committees, members were elected unopposed in 17 in the recently held elections. The elections for the post of chairmanship were also held which were boycotted by the Nazims of the City and Latifabad Talukas.
Dr Ayaz Arain, who resigned from the membership of the committee on education, told this correspondent that he resigned because he did not want to become a part of the rural-urban divide.
He said that understanding among the members of rural and urban Talukas was being undermined by certain forces.
He said that there was no provision in the present system that a member could not file his nomination for more than one committee, and added that in the recent elections the members were forced to file their nominations for only one committee which was not only unfair but illegal as well.
Another member from Latifabad Taluka said there were 49 such members
who were “chosen” in the committees although they did not file their nominations
for these committees.
He claimed that all the important committees were now chaired by members belonging to rural areas, while urban area members were being deliberately ignored.
The other committees which went to the rural areas included Education, Finance and Planning, Works and Services, etc.
A member said that after members from Latifabad and City Taluka boycotted the election for chairman, Dr Rakshanda was chosen as the chairman for the health committee.
District Nazim Dr Makhdoom Rafiquzzaman told this correspondent, “I do not know what has happened in the committees’ elections. But I believe something has gone wrong and this is going to spoil the harmony of my district which I will not allow. I also believe that Rana Mehmood Ali Khan must lead the labour committee. And if it does not happen, I will take him in the labour committee represented by the district government at the provincial-level.”
