Proteas crush Nazim XI by eight wickets

LAHORE, Oct 1: A captain’s knock of 72 by Graeme Smith and fine batting by Jacques Kallis steered South Africa to an impressive eight-wicket win against a City Nazim XI in a 12-a-side practice match under floodlights at the Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday.

Smith scored a polished 117-ball 72 while Kallis contributed 70-ball 55 as the visitors romped home in 46 overs, scoring 253 for three while chasing an imposing target of 251.

Smith and Herschelle Gibbs gave a solid opening stand of 72 off 82 balls. After Gibbs, who was caught by wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal off pacer Sajid Shah for 34, Smith and Kallis added 98 in 124 balls to lift the total to 170.

 Kallis then fell, caught in the deep off part-time leg-spin of Imran Farhat. Smith eventually got out at the total at 189, also falling to Imran, who finished with two for 48. The South African captain was nicely held by Asim Kamal at deep square leg when he tried to sweep.

Neil Mackenzie and Mark Boucher then guided their team to victory, while putting on 64 in 61 balls for the fourth wicket.

Earlier, after winning the toss, City Nazim XI, comprising several internationals, made 250 for four in 50 overs.

Imran Farhat and Faisal Athar got the innings to a fine start, putting 107 before both at the same total. Naved Latif and Faisal Iqbal then gave fine finishes to the innings during their unbroken stand of 61.

Imran, who had been sidelined for a while reminding the PCB with a top-score of 64, which was adorned with seven fours and three sixes. He faced 85 balls.

Faisal Athar compiled 35 with the help of four boundaries.

Asim  Kamal (44, three fours, one six, 58 balls) and  skipper Misbah-ul-Haq  (22, one six, 32 balls) added a quickfire 63 off  76 balls in the third wicket stand.

Naved (45 not out, nine fours, 21 balls) hit Shaun Pollock for four boundaries in an over. Faisal Iqbal’s unbeaten 30 was laced with three fours.
