THATTA, Sept 29: People, including NGO representatives and women councillors, held a demonstration on Monday to protest against the atrocities and excesses towards women.
The Dawn Development Social Welfare Organization, Nargis Bano of the Ayesha Academy, Neelam Abbasi and Farzana Palijo of the Aurat Foundation, a number of councillors of the District Council in coordination with a small number of people marched through the roads raising slogans against Karo-kari and the atrocities against women.
They also demanded that justice be provided to Gulshan Khatti, a victim of male chauvinism.
The protesters stopped in front of the press club where its leaders gave speeches.
Gulshan Khatti too arrived there. She is a housewife who got her hair shaved off and was kept in shackles by her father-in-law. She was set free by the Thatta police. She was victimized by both her father-in-law and brother-in-law, who are now under arrest.
She narrated her ordeal to the audience.
Marvi Abbasi, Nasir Shah and others also gave speeches.
COMPLAINT: Former custodians, pilgrims and residents adjacent to the shrine of Abdullah Shah Ashabi at Makli have complained on Monday against the construction of lavatories adjacent to their ancestral graveyard within the walls of the Dargah by evacuee department authorities.
They sent a joint complaint with 62 signatures to the prime minister, president, chief minister and the minister concerned, mentioning that by erecting lavatories within the walls of the shrine, the administration has desecrated its sanctity.
They demanded that the lavatories be dismantled immediately.
DEMO: Students of the Degree College Thatta, under the auspices of the SPSF, JSSF, SNSF and other organizations, boycotted their classes and blocked the National Highway on Monday demanding that their problems be solved.
They demanded that the hostel block being possessed by some bureaucrat be vacated, computer fees be withdrawn, principal of the college be transferred and a corrupt clerk, Narejo, be removed from the college.
SALARIES NOT PAID: Four employees of the Thatta Market Committee have not been paid their salaries for the last nine months.
These employees include an inspector, a clerk, a Naib Qasid and a chowkidar.
They told this correspondent that being the only bread earners for their families, they were facing hard times due to their salaries not being paid.
