Power failure sparks protest

By Our Correspondent

BADIN, Sept 29: The residents of Badin, Khoski, Nindo Shehr, Kadhan and other towns of the district took to the streets on Monday to protest against power breakdown in four Taluka towns for the last 12 hours.

Hundreds of youngsters took out a procession here and burnt tyres at Shahnawaz Chowk. They raised slogans against the Hesco chief, who, they said, had launched a massive crackdown on defaulters, but had taken no measures for improving line losses and ensuring regular supply of electricity.

Residents of Ward-6 complained that despite numerous complaints, nothing had been done. Ahmed Kumbhar, a local, said low voltage and intermittent power failures were the order of the day and often damaged costly equipments.

The protesters claimed that some officials were patronizing illegal AC connections, which was a major cause of the failures.

But local Hesco officer Salahuddin Khan Leghari, when contacted, said the breakdown on Sunday night was the result of snapping of main wires near Matli and as repairs could not be carried out at night, the power was restored on Monday morning.

CONVICTED: Sessions judge Arjun Ram awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs50,000 to Papoo, son of Dhani Bakhsh Nohani, in a narcotics case while co-accused Moharram was acquitted due to want of evidence.

The Tando Ghulam Ali police had registered a case under the narcotics act in 1994 against the accused for possession of 940gms of hashish and 835gms of opium.
