MIRPURKHAS: Reserved seats for Dalits urged: Admission to medical colleges

MIRPURKHAS, Sept 29: The Scheduled Castes Federation of Pakistan (SCFP) has condemned the government apathy towards Dalits as not a single students from the community has been given admission to medical colleges.
In a press statement issued here, SCFP President Surendar Valasai, former MPA and Senior Vice-President Bherulal Balani and secretary-general Arjundas, advocate, demanded allocation of medical seats to Dalit student.
The health department on recommendation of Hindu MPAs and their allied politicians distributed 19 medical seats among Hindu students of Tharparkar district but not a single was awarded to dalit, they said. The SCFP leaders said the Sindh government was ignoring the no discrimination policy of President Musharraf.
“During current admissions to medical colleges none of the scheduled castes candidate was given any seat in any medical college despite the fact that 35 per cent of the desert district’s population belong to the scheduled castes” they lamented.
“MPA Rajiv Singh with others have been given three seats each for onward distribution among the upper caste Hindu students who prefer to study in Pakistan and migrate to neighbouring country to serve that nation”, they added.
They blamed the Sindh government of selling out the educational interests of dalits to the upper caste Hindu MPAs to save the ruling coalition but causing loss to the integrity of country.
The SCFP leaders called upon patriotic forces of the country to use their influence to stop the discrimination against the Pakistani dalits, especially in Tharparkar, otherwise these smaller things could tarnish the image of country.
The SCFP demanded that a judicial commission headed by a judge of the high court to look into reports of discrimination in the field of education, employment, social and political issues so that dalits of the country could get their due rights.
