KARACHI, Sept 28: Pace trio of Fahad Masood, Junaid Zia and Yasir Arafat helped Pakistan launch their Emerging Team Trophy campaign in style with a convincing 37-run victory over India in Colombo on Sunday.
In a low-scoring match at the R. Premadasa Stadium, India, chasing a moderate target of 138 in 50 overs, were bowled out for exactly 100 in 22.5 overs.
The defeat now leaves India with a daunting challenge of making next Sunday’s final. They were comprehensively outclassed by hosts Sri Lanka by a margin of nine wickets in the double league tournament’s opening match on Saturday.
Fahad Masood, who also excelled during Pakistan Academy’s tour of South Africa last month, bowled with hostility to rip through India’s top-order batting, returning fine analysis of four for 30 in six overs.
The 22-year-old right-arm speedster from Gaggu Mandi disposed of opener Vinayak Mane (3) and Maninder Bisla (0) with successive deliveries in his second over.
Indian captain Gautam Gambhir, who has played in five One-day Internationals, also fell to Fahad. The left-hander opening batsman was caught by Usman Tariq after making 13 off 17 balls.
Fahad, later adjudged Man-of-the-Match, also got rid of wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik, caught behind by Amin-ur-Rehman, for three.
Laxmi Shukla struck five boundaries as he top-scored with 21 off 25 deliveries before he was eighth out, one of three wickets for the beleaguered Junaid Zia, whose inclusion in the recent one-day series against Bangladesh was hotly debated in the media, for 35 runs in 8.5 overs.
Irfan Pathan (11) and left-handed Sivaramakrishnan Vidyut (12 not out) were the only other Indian batsmen to reach double figures.
All-rounder Yasir Arafat picked up the remaining three wickets, including Stuart Binny, son of ex-Indian all-rounder Roger, for a five-ball duck, to end up three for 30 in eight overs.
Earlier, Pakistan made a paltry 137 in 38.4 overs after being invited to bat first.
Opener Babar Naeem batted patiently to contribute 34 off 75 balls before being seventh out at 115.
Yasir was the other main run-getter, striking a bright 28 off 48 balls with the aid of two boundaries and a six. He was bowled by Aavishkar Salvi, who finished with three for 27 in 7.4 overs.
The best of Indian bowlers, however, was lanky Irfan Pathan. The left-arm paceman from Baroda dismissed Shahid Yousuf (19), Aamir Sajjad (0), Asim Munir (1) and Amin-ur-Rehman (5), returning outstanding figures of four for 22 in nine overs.
Pakistan meet Sri Lanka on Monday at the same venue.
