HYDERABAD: SHC sends SHO to prison

By Our Correspondent

HYDERABAD, Sept 26: The Sindh High Court, Hyderabad circuit bench, here on Friday remanded Jamshoro SHO Javed Iqbal Tunio to prison for committing contempt of court.

The SHO had held three court officials, a petitioner woman and her son in unlawful detention for 35 minutes at the police station, harassed and threatened them with dire consequences on Thursday.

The SHO had disobeyed orders of the court passed on Sept 25, observed the bench comprising Justice Mohammad Roshan Essani and Justice Amir Hani Muslim and refused to release the SHO on furnishing surety.

It, however, allowed him to apply for bail and fixed the case hearing on Sept 30.

Advocate Nisar Durrani had filed a criminal application on behalf of Subhan Khatoon against the SHO, the investigation in charge and the Kotri taluka police officer.

In her application, Ms Subhan stated that the Jamshoro police arrested her husband, Allah Dino, and guest, Riaz Hussain, on Sept 20, and the next day her sons, Abdul Sattar and Abdul Wahab, were also apprehended.

She prayed the court to issue an order for the production of the detainees.

The court appointed an official, Hidayatullah Soomro, raid commissioner, to ascertain facts about the detention.

Subsequently, Mr Soomro with the petitioner, Iqbal Ahmed Khan, private secretary to the judge, and Ayub Jatoi, visited the police station.

Mr Soomro headed towards a quarter after Ms Subhan told him that she heard the voice of detainees from there.

A police constable stopped the raid commissioner from entering the quarter.

The SHO, in civvies, came out of the quarter and allowed the commissioner to search only two of three rooms.

The third room was locked though the team heard noises from there but the SHO disallowed them to search it, saying that his family was staying there.

As Mr Soomro insisted that the petitioner who was a woman be allowed to go in the quarter, the SHO got furious, caught him from his collar and dragged him to the police station, hurling abuses.

He asked the policemen to lock the police station and threatened Mr Soomro with dire consequences.

The policemen detained the team for 35 minutes.

Later, the SHO allowed Mr Soomro to talk to the TPO by telephone who finally let the team go.

The commissioner sought registration of an FIR against the SHO, who was informed about the date of hearing of the case.

On Friday, when the matter was taken up in the chamber, the SHO was present but left without informing anyone.

The court called senior police officers after the additional advocate-general informed that the SHO had left.

The SHO came back and told the court that his wife was still in shock as the team had tried to force its way into his house.

His belt was removed and the Dadu ADPO took over his custody. He was sent to the central prison, Hyderabad.
