HYDERABAD: Withdrawal of rise in oil, gas prices urged

HYDERABAD, Sept 26: The district council here on Friday demanded of the government to withdraw the increase in prices of gas, petrol and essential commodities to fulfil its commitment not to present any mini budget in the current fiscal.
The session adopted labour councillor Rana Mehmood Ali Khan’s resolution to this effect, which said that contrary to the government announcement, gas tariff and prices of petrol and other commodities had been increased which had landed poor people into trouble.
He said that railway fares had also been increased by 10 to 15 per cent and the prices of petrol and diesel were increased thrice with the result that transporters and industrialists had taken undue advantage of it by increasing fares and prices of commodities.
Another resolution, moved by Shahnaz Baqai, was also adopted that called for a grant from the federal and provincial governments for laying new infrastructure in Latifabad taluka.
She said that because of broken sewerage lines, water logging and salinity had increased in Latifabad, affecting residential places.
Her resolution regarding inevitability of the construction of an overhead bridge between Latifabad and Hyderabad was also unanimously passed.
The session also elected Khalil Memon as a member of the District Public Safety Commission on a seat fallen vacant due to election of Farheen Mughal as MPA.
Minority councillor Kanyha Lal and women councillors Badrun Nisa Qazi and Firdous Abro had filed their nomination papers but they withdrew them.
Mr Lal said that though minorities deserved a seat in the DPSC but he was withdrawing as a gesture of goodwill.
Ms Abro said that she was persuaded by the district Nazim and the district council convener to withdraw from the contest.
The newly-elected member assured that he would give his best as the DPSC member.
The convener adjourned the session for indefinite period.
