Opium seized

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 25: Police and customs agents seized 1.5 tons of opium that arrived from Pakistan in one of Kuwait’s biggest ever drug hauls, press reports said on Thursday.

The opium was found on Wednesday in a shipment of 300 containers of paint that had arrived more than one month ago, Kuwaiti newspapers reported.

Police and customs officials became suspicious of the cargo because of the time it had spent at the country’s al-Shuaiba port, and as the trading company claiming the cargo did not specialize in importing paint.

The Pakistani owner of the company and a driver were arrested, they said.—dpa
