$300m aid for NWFP under study, says Nancy

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Sept 24: US Ambassador Nancy J. Powel in a meeting here on Wednesday with Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani indicated that the American government had a proposal to grant $300 million aid to support the Frontier government’s efforts for quality services in the social sector.

The American government had already approved a support programme for the improvement of tehsil hospitals.

The US envoy also held out assurance to look into the proposal of the chief minister for preparing a package for the poppy growing areas, including Kohistan and inaccessible areas in Swabi, North and South Waziristan agencies.

Welcoming the American ambassador, the CM enumerated various steps the provincial government had taken for the improvement of services in the social sector, saying that the government had introduced a unique style of good governance and made consultation the basis for running the government’s affairs.

The chief minister informed the US dignitary that maintaining the law and order situation and fighting crimes was the foremost target of the government.

The law enforcement agencies were sensitized to the situation on ground and these agencies made achievements, he added.

The police used to make convoys because of the insecure situation which prevailed on roads and highways, he said, adding that now the situation had changed.

Referring to the social services, the chief minister said his government fixed targets in various sectors that included education, health, drinking water, roads and agriculture.

In agricultural sector, the government planned to bring the wasteland under cultivation which would generate job opportunities and enable the province to achieve food autarky.
