Honours for Munir, Taimur, Asif and Tahira

By Imran Naeem Ahmad

ISLAMABAD, Sept 21: In a thrilling finish, professional Muhammad Munir of Islamabad Club, on Sunday scooped up a cheque for Rs 43,000 defeating Irfan Mehmood in a playoff decided on the second hole in the COAS Open Championship that concluded at the Rawalpindi Golf Course.

The winner of the main COAS Trophy contested by amateurs was Lt. Col Asif Mehdi of Sargodha Golf Club whose net score of 207 was way ahead of Imtiaz who took the runners-up spot with net 219.

The top prize in the gross competition went to the experienced Taimur Hassan who had a score of 220 followed by Asif on 222 and Vacuous Ahmed who ended up with 227.

Tahira Nazir claimed both the ladies gross and net crowns. However as is usually the case, she was awarded the trophy only in the net event.

In the gross competition with a score of 164 she left behind Mehvish Javed (177) and Jamila Jabbar (180). But Mehvish was declared the winner.

The net event saw Tahira finishing on top with 150 and was followed by Rubab Haider on 154 and Ghazala Zafar who was 155.

Munir, who was third going into Sunday’s final round, and Irfan the overnight leader, both finished with identical totals of three under par 213 over three days.

In the playoff, both players ended up tied while a bogey on the second hole ended Irfan’s hopes of laying his hands on the trophy as Munir played par.

Munir had a last round of three under par 69 and struck two birdies on the front nine and had another two while coming back. He bogeyed only once on the par 3 second hole.

Irfan on the other hand scored another round of one under par 71 following up his similar scores on the first two days. He started off on Sunday with a bogey on the first hole but later did well and collected two birdies on the 7th and 16th holes.

Muhammad Shabbir’s total of two under 214 earned him the third spot ahead of Imdad Hussain who was fourth with a score of 215.

Meanwhile Col Asif, a five handicapper, went one over par 73 on the last day, a round in which he bogeyed four times. His outing featured three birdies.

In the gross competition for amateurs, Taimur of Islamabad Golf Club scored one over par 73 with two birdies on holes seven and 17 and three bogeys. His nearest rival Col Asif also had a final round of 73.
