MITHI, Sept 21: Flour mill owners of Tharparkar district have urged the Sindh government to enhance the district wheat quota from 20,000 to 100,000 bags per month.
In a fax to the Sindh food secretary, Kishore, Jai Parkash and others said Tharparkar did not grow wheat and its populace depended on the supply of wheat for its food requirements.
The food department had allocated a wheat quota of only 20,000 bags per month for 1.5 million people of Tharparkar district whereas the quota of Mirpurkhas and Sanghar districts was 40,000 bags each per month, they said.
There were about 600 flour mills in Tharparkar of which 215 were registered with the food department but they were supplied inadequate wheat quota, causing the closure of some of them, they said.
Most of the remaining flour mills often remained non-operational due to short supply of wheat under flawed policy of the food department, the flour mill owners said.
