Textile students continue protest

FAISALABAD, Sept 19: The National Textile University students boycotted classes for the second consecutive day on Friday to protest the management’s plan to increase the number of seats for the regular degree programmes.

The students demonstrated against the university management, pledging that they would continue their protest till the acceptance of their demands.

They said the university had planned to increase 125 more seats in the spinning, weaving, processing and garments degree programmes despite the fact that it lacked facilities for the 150 students engaged in these programmes. As these seats would be filled on a self-finance scheme, they said, the university merely wanted to generate funds.

The faculty had already rejected the proposal of increasing the seats for the regular degree courses of textile, but the university management was adopting all negative steps to implement its decision, the protesters said.

They demanded the federal government that it should take stock of the situation and direct the authorities concerned not to increase the seats for the regular degree programmes.

WASA PROJECT: District Nazim Zahid Nazir has urged the union council members, tehsil municipal administration and members of provincial and national assemblies not to oppose the mega water supply project.

Talking to newsmen here on Friday, the Nazim claimed that row over the tubewells’ sinking along the Jhang Branch canal should be amicably resolved.

He said the Rs4,500 million project of providing potable water to people had been approved after two years’ struggle. If the project could not be completed, many other schemes for the development of infrastructure would be affected, he feared.
