Probe ordered into custodial death

By Our Correspondent

GUJRANWALA, Sept 19: A proclaimed offender, who was involved in a murder case, was allegedly tortured to death by police on Thursday night.

The district and sessions judge on Friday ordered judicial probe into the incident.

Reports said PO Muhammad Afzaal, a resident of Madhu Khalil village, killed Muhammad Abbas over an enmity. The Aroop police registered a case against him under sections 302 and 324 PPC on Aug 25, 2002, but failed to arrest him. He was declared a proclaimed offender.

A few days ago, the Sheikhupura Saddar police arrested the PO and handed him over to the Aroop police, which sought his three-day physical remand from a court. The police allegedly tortured him during the course of interrogation due to which he fainted and was taken to the DHQ hospital. He was referred to the Mayo Hospital, Lahore, where he died.

The heirs of the deceased have accused the investigation officer, ASI Zafar Iqbal, of torturing the captive to death. The police, however, denied the charge and claimed that Afzaal died due to illness.

The body was sent to the DHQ hospital for autopsy.

JAIL INCIDENT: The Anti-Terrorism Court No 2, Gujranwala, on Friday refused to hear the bail application of the Sialkot jail former assistant superintendent, and transferred the case to the ATC No 1.

The judge, Mirza Rafiuddin, observed that the entire case was being heard by the ATC No 1, so the bail application of the accused should be transferred to it.

Accused Akhtar Iqbal has already been arrested by the Sialkot Civil Lines police.

DETENTION: The district and sessions judge on Friday directed the district police officer to submit till Sept 23 a report on illegal detention of two men by Baghbanpura and Wazirabad police teams.

According to reports, Baghbanpura and Wazirabad police teams caught rickshaw driver Ehsanullah and farmer Abid Husain, respectively, and detained them without any justification.

A court bailiff retrieved the two men after which DPO Saud Aziz summoned the SHOs of the police stations.
