Demo held against corrupt officials

By Our Correspondent

DADU, Sept 18: A large number of people took out a procession here on Thursday against the alleged corruption of district officers of works and services, roads, buildings and education works departments.

The protesters, including government contractors and activists of the Sindh People’s Students Federation, Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz, Jeay Sindh Students Federation and the People’s Hari Committee, after marching through the main roads of the town arrived at the local press club where they held a demonstration for two hours.

Talking to the demonstrators, contractor Sohrab Ahmad Magsi said the DCO, who was also the project director of development schemes, was not carrying out uplift works in the district properly as, he alleged, contractors who were not paying him commission were not being awarded contracts.

He said the DCO had issued work orders of development schemes amounting Rs110 million under the Khushhal Pakistan Programme and the Drought Emergency Relief Assistance to contractors without merit.

He said due to the appointment of corrupt officers work on development schemes of 2003-2004 was not started as yet and substandard material was used in KPP and DERA schemes completed in 2002-2003.

Mr Magsi appealed to President Gen Pervez Musharraf to take notice of the matter.

Later, the protesters observed a token hunger strike outside the press club.
