KARACHI, Sept 18: A sub-committee has been formed to evolve a perfect system for the receipt and assessment of claims and disbursement of the amount claimed against the damage cause by the spillage of oil from the broken oil tanker Tasman Spirit which had ran aground off Karachi coast late July.

In this regard, the visiting Claim Consultant from the International Maritime Organization, John Maxwell, would be assist the sub-committee comprising representatives of the Karachi Port Trust, Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (charters), Protection and Industry Club (ship-owners), City District Government Karachi and Defence Housing Authority as well as the Sindh environment secretary.

A decision to this effect was taken at the meeting of Coordination Committee, established on the directives of President Musharraf, which was held under the chairmanship of the provincial Chief Secretary Dr Mutawakkil Qazi.

Mr Maxwell, in his presentation before the Coordination Committee gave his expert opinion on the subject matter.

The meeting was informed that the French expert on landfill site, John Luke, currently in Pakistan, had visited the landfill site to assist the city government and environment department in the safe disposal of contaminated debris collected from the Clifton beach.—PPI
