PPP leader opposes Kalabagh dam project

MIRPURKHAS, Sept 17: Pakistan People’s Party leader and member of National Assembly, Nawab Yousuf Talpur has opposed the Kalabagh project and asked the government to abandon it.

Talking to a delegation of growers from mango belt of Mirpurkhas district on Wednesday, he said that the project aimed at depriving the people of smaller provinces of their rightful water share. He said that it was Sindh which moved the first resolution for the creation of Pakistan and now it was Sindh which faced the scarcity of water by implementing the Kalabagh dam project.

He pointed out that three of the four provincial assemblies had opposed its construction and there seemed no cause of digging a disputed canal.

He warned that Sindh would oppose the Kalabagh dam.

He also recalled that the PPP had proposed construction of small dams to meet the requirements of water and there was no reason to push for larger dams which were difficult to manage.

He called upon the government to desist from carrying out a disputed plan which would only create distrust among the people.
