GUJRANWALA, Sept 17: The former district zakat committee chairman and river Ravi bridge toll tax contractor was arrested for misappropriation of funds on Wednesday in Alipur Chattha.

Mirza Mahboob Alam was involved in an embezzlement of hundreds of thousands of rupees in the toll tax. The NAB, Islamabad, had been conducting an inquiry against him for the last few months.

It was learnt that Alam was present in his house in Alipur Chattha when a police party headed by Wazirabad ASP Waqar Ahmad Chohan raided there and arrested him. Later, he was handed over to the NAB.

It may be mentioned that his two sons — Mirza Mahmood Amjed and Mirza Farooq Amjed — were the Nazims of two union councils of Alipur Chattha.

KILLS SON: A landlord clubbed to death his son on Wednesday over a piece of agriculture land dispute in Ladheywala Warraich.

Muhammad Afzal wanted to get his share of agriculture land, but his father Bashir Ahmed refused him. After exchanging harsh words on Wednesday, Ahmed badly thrashed his son with a club. He died on the spot. The accused escaped from the scene.

ACQUITTED: The local Anti-Terrorism Court No 2 acquitted two murder accused after a compromise with the heirs of the deceased here on Wednesday.

According to the prosecution, former councillor Muhammad Aslam alias Acho Pandianwala and Zubair Bhatti had killed Sabir Hussain and injured his brother Talib Hussain over a monetary issue in Gujranwala on Oct 14, 2002.

RECOVERED: A local court bailiff raided the Baghbanpura police station and recovered a man kept in an illegal detention there and produced him before court here on Wednesday.

District and sessions judge Riazul Hassan summoned the Baghbanpura SHO on Thursday (today).

Muhammad Younas, the father of detenu Ehsan, had pleaded that his son was detained without any justification while his rickshaw was also impounded by the police.
