PESHAWAR, Sept 17: Chief of his own faction of Jamiat Ulema-i- Islam Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said that talks between the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal and the government on the Legal Framework Order will succeed and the government will not be allowed to escape from signing an agreement.

“There is no outlet for the government to escape from the agreement,” Maulana Fazl said while speaking at a public meeting at Chowk Yadgar, here on Wednesday.

He said under the agreement, the government would have to bring a constitutional package to Parliament. He, however, did not give details of the proposed agreement.

Criticizing the government’s proposed plan to construct new dams and reservoirs in the country, he said President Gen Pervez Musharraf had announced the construction of controversial projects to create rift among the federating units and divert people’s attention from “core issues.”

He said the President’s announcement would cause disharmony among the federating units.

He said the government should take the three provinces into confidence before kicking off the work on the disputed projects in the country. The government should first address reservations of the NWFP, Sindh and Balochistan on Kala Bagh dam, he added.

He said the technical issues should not be politicised and the government should constitute a committee of experts to select appropriate sites for the construction of reservoirs.
