Saba retains crown


PESHAWAR, Sept 15: Saba Mehboob of Peshawar retained ladies singles title after defeating Sabreena of Mardan in the final of NWFP ranking badminton championship played at indoor hall of Qayyum Sports Complex on Monday.

It was the third consecutive title for Saba for who was top seed of the championship.

Saba took no time in eliminating Sabreena Gul of Mardan 11-9, 11-8, 11-8.

In the ladies doubles final Sabreena and Sittara of Mardan defeated Sana and Shazia of Peshawar in the marathon five sets encounter 15-10, 15-13 and 15-12.

In the women veteran singles final Mrs. Sadaf beat Shazia Hassan 11-7, 11-8, 11-5 while in the doubles Mrs. Sadaf and Mrs. Khadim defeated Tuba Alam and Mrs. Shazia Khalid 15-10, 10-15, 15-12 and 15- 13.

Defending champion Mushtaq Ahmed of D.I. Khan and Abdus Salaam Khan of Peshawar will clash in the final.

Mushtaq outclassed Irfan Afridi of Fata 15-9, 12-15, 12-15, 15-9, 15-7, 15-13, while Abdul Salaam, a former national junior champion, eliminated Amin-ul-Haq of Abbottabad 15-9, 15-7, 15-10.

In the Under-19 boys singles semifinals Saud Afzal of Peshawar upset top seed Masood 11-15, 15-12, 15-10 while Nabeel of downed Nadeem 15-8, 15-10, 15-9.

In the Under-19 boys double semifinals Rehmat and Nasir of beat Shahid and Nadeem 3-0 while Arsalan and Naimat Khan defeated Muhammad Suleman and Tariq 3-0 to enter into the final.

Tahir beat Asif Ali 3-0 and Murad outclassed Tufail 3-0 to advance into boys Under-16 final.—APP
