LAHORE, Sept 14: Odds-on favourite English filly, Snow Drop, galloped home to win the feature event during the first Lahore Winter Meeting held at the Racecourse on Sunday before a large crowd of racing fans.
The long striding daughter of English sire Petradia-out-of- Richardstown Lass, Snow Drop responded quickly to jockey Aamar Parvez’ urging with an astonishing burst of speed to defeat long chaser Moment To Moment by one-and-a-quarter lengths handily.
Better Case and Daring Eagle completed the frame among as many runners. Earlier Incognito and Zargar were withdrawn from the race leaving only four runners in the field.
The winner clocked one minute 13 4/5 seconds over the sprinting distance of 1200m.
The filly is owned by Iftikhar Tarrar and trained by Haji Ghulam Sarwar, the champion trainer of yester-year. Normally the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards do not hold a race when the runners are less than six or five at least but they used their option to let it run, perhaps its being the feature event. This was the sixth of the day.
Rank outsider Fair Boy put in a bold front-running performance to annex the fourth race causing the biggest upset of the afternoon card.
His early dash right from the start paid off well to crown his success from fast finishing Puma King by a head in photo- finish. Green Hill and Imagine Iff completed the board among eight runners. The winner clocked one minute 2 seconds over 1000 metres.
Four-year-old bay gelding Eastern Bird posted an amazing victory in the fifth and supporting event run over 1000 metres. He defeated Dhandhana by one-and-a-half lengths. Mahnoor and Royal Fantasy completed the frame among seven runners.
Trainer I. Nawab opened his winter meetings account on a triumphant note by saddling two winners. He first sent out Much Pleasure to his great pleasure in the opener. He scored his double by saddling Qaswa Princess to win the third race.
The Lahore Winter Meetings opened on a silent note with the LRC hoping that the 32-meetings programme will be a grand success. The four hours spectacular racing went smoothly to the delight of the race-fans when five fancied horses won in a card of seven events.
