KARACHI, Sept 14: Punters burnt their fingers at the Karachi Gymkhana races when only two well backed horses obliged them in a card of eight races held here today at the local turf.
Your Honour and Fantastic Beauty were the only horses who ran a according to their form as other form horses were guilty of in and out running but it failed to draw the attention of the people sitting in the glass house.
Those guilty were Silver City in the opener, Bye Bye in the second Rehmat Hi Rehmat in the third, Sweet Grandy in the seventh and Thousand Up in the concluding event of the day. With the exception of Silver City and Sweet Grandy others failed to figure even on the board.
As if the in and out running of the form horses was not enough, the Chairman of the Karachi Race Club, Mr Yousuf Dada set an unprecedented example when he walked to the paddock for the presentation of the Emirates Farm Youngster Cup and posed for photograph with the winner, which is owned by Mr Tariq Saeed, brother of leading book-maker Mr Sadiq, who also appeared after a while and got his photo taken.
It has no parallel in the history of Pakistan racing as the Chairman who holds a high post never before showed his favouritism to any owner and when he was fully aware that the owner is related to a bookmaker.
Jockey Sher Mohammad did a dare devil act of pulling Eye Sore owned by Shah Mardan Shah II Pir Pagaro VII’s in front of the main stand looking sideways waiting for some other horse to overtake his charge.
Any rider with such an act would have been sent home packing but for reasons best known to the stewards of the Karachi Race Club he went scot free. It was a slap in the face of the stewards who should have atleast called the rider up and to save their skin would have ordered an inquiry.
Pir Pagaro who is a lover of racing would never have objected to any action against the rider but the stewards do what they like under his cover.
It is no wonder all the riders or trainers whose charges were guilty of in and out running went home unscathed.
The day’s honour was shared by trainer Taj Mohammad and jockey Shahzad who both earned good doubles. While trainer Taj Mohammad scored his double through Ever Shine and Your Honour, Shahzad worked up his double through Fantastic Beauty and Micky Mikado II.
His handling of Micky Mikado II was a true reflection of his calibre when he snatched the win from the teeth of Innuendo, ridden by M. Nasir who has the reputation of being an honest and hard working jockey and is perhaps the best after Shahzad.
