BULLDOZED: The City Tehsil Council bulldozed an illegal parking stand at Katcha Fatu Mand Road during its anti-encroachment drive here on Sunday.
Some extortionists were collecting a forced tax from the transporters after constructing the parking stand on the state land.
Transporters, including wagon and taxi drivers, had demonstrated outside the city tehsil complex and demanded that the illegal parking stand should be demolished.
City Nazim Babu Javed had an inquiry conducted into the establishment of the illegal parking stand and ordered its demolition.
PROTESTED: The bricks kiln workers federation strongly protested against kiln owners for not raising the wages of its workers.
Speaking at a meeting held here on Sunday, federation president Chaudhry Baderuddin said that brick kiln workers were being deprived of their legal rights.
They said wages of workers had been fixed at Rs180 per 1,000 bricks by the government, but the kiln owners were paying them only Rs120. This was despite of the fact that the kiln owners had enhanced the price of bricks from Rs1,600 per 1,000 to Rs2,000, they said.
They also alleged that kiln and factory owners engaged the workers for 12 hours instead of eight hours in violation of the labour laws.
