KARACHI: Acute water shortage in parts of city

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Sept 14: People residing along Lyari’s D. D. Chaudhry Road (Union Council No 5) and Yousuf Haroon (West) Road Nos 1 and 2, near the Lea Market Telephone Exchange, are confronted not only with the menace of contaminated water but have been experiencing acute water shortage since long.

They complain that although they have written five letters to the official concerned of the city government’s water and sanitation department, no measures have so far been taken to redress their problems.

In a recent letter written to the W&S department’s superintending engineer, Abdul Raheem Khatti, residents of the water-starved localities stated inter alia:” We the residents of the area would once again like to inform you that there is acute shortage of potable water in our area and we are not getting drinking water on our alternate turns. In the beginning only contaminated water comes in our taps for about 10 to 20 minutes, which is later followed by air only.” The letter says that in the absence of piped water the people have no choice but to drink subsoil unhygienic water at the cost of their health.

MEHMOODABAD: Over 350 houses of Mehmoodabad’s Liaquat Ashraf Colony have been suffering acute water shortage for the last one year, and yet the officials concerned of the W&S department have not yet managed to restore the normal supply.

Residents of the affected locality complain that seven rows, each having 50 houses, have been experiencing acute water shortage for the last one year and all their efforts to get the supply restored have remained unheeded.

“On a number of occasions the officials concerned chalked out some plans of laying alternative pipeline for ensuring normal supply to the affected houses, but all such plans have remain unimplemented,” a resident of Liaquat Ashraf Colony said.

LYARI: Water supply to all the affected localities of Lyari was restored on Sunday following the repair of a damaged 33-inch dia pipeline.

An official of the WS department’s water trunk main department on Sunday claimed the pipeline had been repaired much ahead of schedule and normal supply to all the affected areas had been restored.
