Majority in US opposed to new budget for Iraq
WASHINGTON, Sept 14: A majority of Americans disapprove of President George Bush’s request to Congress for an extra 87 billion dollars to fund the reconstruction of Iraq, according to a survey published in the Washington Post on Sunday.
Six in 10 Americans said they do not support the proposal, which the president announced in his nationally televised address a week ago. It marks the most significant public rejection of a Bush initiative on national security or terrorism since the attacks of September 11, 2001.
The poll, which the newspaper conducted with the television channel ABC, showed 58 per cent approval for Bush’s overall performance as president.
However, only 42 per cent of the 1,000 people questioned considered the president was doing a good job in getting the economy back on track.
The ratings were the lowest for the president since he took office nearly three years ago.—dpa
