Four schoolgirls feared drowned
GUJRANWALA, Sept 11: Four girls of a primary school were feared drowned in a canal while nine others were rescued when a tonga plunged into a canal in Sukheki on Thursday.
Sources said the rescue operation was carried out by people of the area and passers-by. Senior officers of the district administration and police reached the place later on and started a search operation with the help of divers.
The missing girls were identified as Sadaf (6), Ambrin (12), Komal (6) and Batool (5).
PROTEST: Residents and traders of Maraliwala village on Thursday demonstrated against the humiliation and injuring a prayer leader and his son by assailants for opposing the laying of cable network.
The protesters demanded that the accused should be arrested and a criminal case be registered against them.
Some youths, led by Mazher Butt, wanted to promote cable network in the village and for this purpose they arranged a big size dish antenna and other equipments. After getting information, prayer leader Maulana Muhammad Hussain Rizvi opposed such facility on the ground that this would spoil the character of the village youth.
Maulana Rizvi also urged the people to protest against the installation of the cable network system in the village. Falling into a rage, Mazher Butt and his accomplices came to the mosque, misbehaved the prayer leader and injured his son Qari Ali Asghar with butts of the gun. They also threatened them of dire consequences if they continued advocating against the cable network.
After the incident, religious leaders of every sect gathered in the mosque and strongly condemned the attack on the prayer leader and his son. Later, residents and Anjuman Tajran took out the protest procession against the assailants and demanded their immediate arrest.
SHOT DEAD: A man was shot dead while his wife and granddaughter sustained injuries when rivals opened fire on them to settle an old score here on Thursday.
Naimatullah along with his wife and granddaughter was on his way to Gujranwala district jail from Jandiala Baghwala village to see his sons involved in a murder case. Near the Graveyard Road, Rehman, Imran, Zaheer, Rafiq, Ghulam Rasul, Ghulam Muhammad and others intercepted them and opened fire on them after exchanging harsh words. Naimat died instantly while his wife Sidiqan Bibi and granddaughter Madiha sustained bullet injuries. They were rushed to the local DHQ Hospital in critical condition.
The deceased party had killed their five rivals — Ibrahim, Ghulam Nabi, Rafiq, Sadiq and Sakina Bibi — over the issue of lifting earth from fields in Jandiala Baghwala village around a year ago.
Police have registered a case and are investigating.
Meanwhile, proclaimed offender Amin of Kot Ladha village was shot dead by his rivals in an armed clash here on Thursday.
