HYDERABAD, Sept 11: The University of Sindh has undertaken a research project on antimicrobial activity of medicinal plants in collaboration with the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Jamshoro.

The research team comprises Dr Parvez Iqbal, skin specialist of LUMHS, Prof Dr Tasneem Kazi, the centre of excellence, analytical chemistry, University of Sindh and the research scholar, Abdul Jabbar Pirzado.

Dr Wazir Shaikh of the botany department, University of Sindh, is supervising the research team.

The researchers have collected approximately 20 medicinal plants from the Kohistan (hilly) region of Dadu district.

The ground-breaking study will be immensely important in further preparation of medicines from indigenous medicinal plants, the scholars said. The research scholars extracted chemicals that are present in various parts of plants and they also experimented on the fungus.

The vice-chancellor University of Sindh, Mazharul Haq Siddiqui, has been informed that the project will provide information about essential elements present in various important medicinal plants used for skin disease and evaluation of their antimicrobial activity would help in promoting further research and would provide an insight to physicians and herbal practitioners.

Dr Siddiqui appreciated the project’s impact on society, hoping salutary results. He assured scholars of full cooperation and support for the research study.
