Newcomer crushes top seed Davydenko


BUCHAREST, Sept 10: Top seed Nikolay Davydenko went crashing to a first round defeat in the 380,000 euro ATP tournament on Tuesday to qualifier Igor Andreev.

The 20-year-old Andreev marked his debut on the ATP circuit with a 7-5, 6-7 (1/7), 6-0 win over his 22-year-old fellow Russian, who won his first two titles this year at Adelaide and Estoril.

“I didn’t think about winning, I just played my game and tried to do my best,” said Andreev. “He missed at some important points in the third set, maybe he wasn’t fully concentrated,” added the Russian who goes on to meet Argentine Jose Acasuso in the second round.

Two-time quarter-finalist Galo Blanco sent fellow Spaniard and defending champion David Ferrer packing 6-2, 6-3, and next meets John van Lottum of the Netherlands.

Second seed Nicolas Massu of Chile advanced to the second round after scoring a 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 win over Peruvian Luis Horna and next meets Czech qualifier Frantisek Cermak who rallied to defeat Germany’s Lars Burgsmuller 6-7 (4/7), 6-1, 6-2.

MARTINEZ TRIUMPHS


BALI: Spanish third seed Conchita Martinez overcame a stomach upset as well as opponent Arantxa Parra in a 6-1 7-6 first round victory at the Wismilak International on Wednesday.

Martinez, last year’s losing finalist, was totally in charge against her compatriot in the first set but struggled in the second as she began to feel unwell.

The tournament doctor attended her on court before the tiebreak but Martinez recovered to sneak it 7-5.

Meanwhile top seed Chanda Rubin and number two Elena Dementieva eased through to the quarter-finals.

Home favourite Angelique Widjaja fought back from 5-3 down in the final set to defeat Russia’s Dinara Safina 7-6 4-6 7-5 in a rain-interrupted first round match.

In other second round matches on Wednesday Germany’s Anca Barna upset eighth-seeded South Korean Cho Yoon-jeong 6-3 1-6 6-3 and Saori Obata of Japan thrashed Austria’s Barbara Schett 6-1 6-1.
