MULTAN, Sept 9: Pakistan cricket manager Haroon Rasheed Tuesday defended banned captain Rashid Latif, denying the wicketkeeper cheated against Bangladesh in the third Test.
Latif was banned for five one-day internationals for claiming a catch off Bangladesh batsman Alok Kapali during third day of the match in Multan last Friday. Pakistan won the Test by one wicket .
“Latif did not cheat. Had he known the catch was not completed he would surely have called the batsman back,” Haroon said. “The whole Pakistan team is behind Rashid.”
South African match referee Mike Procter banned Rashid after a complaint from Bangladesh manager M. A. Latif.
TV replays showed Rashid did not complete the catch.
However, since both on-field umpires Russell Tiffin and Asoka de Silva had unclear view, Kapali walked off the field after Rashid claimed the catch.—Reuters
