‘Elections not held under LFO’

Published September 9, 2003

SUKKUR, Sept 8: Former speaker National Assembly Illahi Bux Soomro has said that at the time of oath-taking in the National Assembly, neither did anyone talk about the LFO nor did anybody take oath under the LFO, and added that the matter of the LFO should have been decided at the time of oath-taking, and now after a lapse of a long time, there is no need to bring the issue again.

He said this while talking to newsmen at Jacobabad on Monday.

He said that the elections were not held under the LFO, but were held instead by the order of the Supreme Court.

Mr Soomro said that President Gen Musharraf is a straight-forward person, but, unfortunately, his advisers are not good, otherwise such a situation would not have prevailed in the country.

He said that as long as President Gen Musharraf is in the government, there is no danger to the country.

He said that Prime Minister Jamali’s visit to the USA has no importance because President Gen Musharraf “had settled all matters with President Bush”. Now there is nothing left for Jamali to talk about, he added.

Mr Soomro advised the government and opposition to work together for the betterment of the country and to strengthen democracy.

He said that problems were not solved by being obstinate.

He said that as far as the uniform of President Gen Musharraf is concerned, there is no harm in it; Gen Zia-ul-Haq wore his uniform till death.

He said that Zia-ul-Haq made 80 amendments in the Constitution but parliament passed only 18 of them, and added that President Gen Musharraf had made 23 amendments in the Constitution, which should be sent to parliament for approval.

PPP(SB): The activists of the PPP (SB) observed token hunger strike in front of the Thul Press Club on Monday against the Kalabagh Dam and greater Thal canal.

Speaking on the occasion, leaders of the PPP (SB), including Gul Bahar Jaffery, Abdul Qudoos Shah, Haji Abdullah, Mukhtiar Abro and Gada Banglani, said that the Kalabagh Dam and Thal canal were against the interests of Sindh, and added that the construction of these projects could pose danger to the integrity of Pakistan.

They said that an environment of confrontation would be created among the people of Sindh and Punjab by initiating these projects.
