LAHORE, Sept 6: A lengthy card of eight races featuring as many cup events bearing the names of national war heroes, the recipients of country’s highest gallantry award, Nishan-i-Haider highlight the Lahore Gymkhana races to be held in connection with the Defence Of Pakistan Day at the Racecourse on Sunday.
Two of the eight cup events has been sponsored by Toyo Nasic and Eden City.
The main event, Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed Cup, a class I, II and III combined handicap race to be run over the middle distance of 1400m has 13 acceptors barring last-minute withdrawals.
The contestants are from among the top animals racing in Lahore. If one follows runners on class, handicap, past and present performances and track work, four of them come into chance. They are: bay filly Fair Play, bay English filly Dock Land Diva, bay horse Burn Heart and brown gelding King Of Bhakkar. On classification and handicap Dock Land Diva enjoys an edge over others. On recent performances Burn Heart may be his top most challenger. This will be the eighth and last race of the card.
The seventh and supporting event, Captain Muhammad Sawar Shaheed Toyo Nasic Cup for class IV to be run over 1200 metres has 13 runners, if there are no last-minute withdrawals.
This looks a match between chestnut gelding Moment To Moment and bay mare On On. The former has a slight advantage over the sprinting distance of 1200 metres.
Bay filly Legality seems to be enjoying advantage over her seven rivals in Captain Karnal Sher Khan Eden City Cup to be contested over 1200 metres. Although promoted to the top weight of 9-4 Legality still can have the better of Ponchi and Amazing, who would be her close challengers and thorns in her way to success.
Steel Legend, Song Of Freedom and Imagine Iff are outstanding entrires in the Fl. Lt. Rashid Minhas Shaheed Cup over 1200 metres. They should fight for the top honours.
The other cup events to be contested in the afternoon are named after Major Raja Aziz Bhatty Shaheed, Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed, Major Muhammad Akram Shaheed, and Sawar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed.
