KARACHI, Sept 6: Kamal Farooq’s Al Ashia won the Defence Day Cup run over seven furlongs with a brilliant run at the Karachi races held here today at the local turf.
Al Ashia was ridden by leading jockey M. Nasir who handled the mare with precision making the first favourite bite the dust.
She was sadlled by last year’s champion Taj Mohammad. Trainer Taj Mohammad and rider M. Nasir ended the day with a fine double as they had seen Mr Humayun Mirza’s colour pass the winning post in the opener through Your Honour who recorded his maiden win in a smart time of 1 Min 4-1/5 secs which promised a bright future for the three-year old.
Besides trainer Taj Mohammad, trainer M. Pervaiz also worked up a good double through Fast And Furious who also recorded an impressive maiden win and Khasul Khas who caused the biggest upset of the day.
Keen Winner in the Defence Day Cup and Strike The Gold in the fifth race put up dubious runs.
While the former ridden by Shahzad found the pace set by Al Ashia too hot, the handling of Strike The Gold by Shahzad was certainly suspect as first he let Khasul Khas go to the front while negotiating the bend and then never charged his mount who failed to catch up Khasul Khas.
Besides Your Honour another horse who recorded his maiden win was Fast And Furious who won like a champion promising bright future.
The running of Savero in the second race and Visitor in the fifth race left many biting their nail.
Both the horses finished fourth in their respective races which by all imagination was nothing short of in and out running but the stewards failed to take note of the inconsistency of the public fancy.
Thousand Up completed hat-trick with another thumping win.
