ISLAMABAD, Sept 6: Safeer Khan of PAF led the under-19s into the quarterfinals of the 7th Hashim Khan National Junior Squash Championship on Saturday with straight games defeat of Haider Jamal.
He scored a 9-4, 9-3, 10-8 victory over his rival from Punjab as the main round of the championship got under way at the Roshan Khan Squash Complex.
Yasir Butt, the junior British Open champion brushed aside Tariq Aziz with a straightforward 9-2, 9-0, 9-0 win over Tariq Aziz while Basit Ashfaq’s task was made easier by Attique Butt who retired after the second game. Basit had led 9-0, 9-4.
Also advancing to Sunday’s quarterfinals in the under-19 category was the talented Farhan Mahboob who downed Maqbali Khan 9-0, 9-2, 9-1 in what was an easy victory for him.
Faisal Zaman also made the last eight grade by beating Adnan Gul 9-4, 9-4, 9-7 while Khalid Atlas knocked out Sajid Khan 9-3, 9-2, 9-3 to go through. Naveed Nasir, a 9-6, 9-1, 9-4 victor over Rizwan Ahmed, also made the grade as did Shah Nawaz who defeated 9-2, 9-6, 9-3.
In the under-17s, Asim Shehzad had to draw all his energies in overcoming the challenge of Sindh’s Muhammad Kashif 9-10, 9-3, 5-9, 9-5, 9-4 to check into the quarterfinals. In contrast Aqib Hanif enjoyed an easy day on court, his victim being Obaid Jehan whom he dispatched 9-0, 9-1, 9-0.
Fahim Gul, Majeed Hussain and Alamzeb Jnr were the other winners of the day as were Muhammad Ali, Farzan Rashid and Bilal Zaman.
PAF’s Faheem was stretched to four games by Rehmanullah before advancing 0-9, 9-1, 9-5, 9-7 but it was a cakewalk for Majeed Hussain of Army who routed Sind’s Muhammad Naeem 9-0, 9-3, 9-4. Alamzeb Jnr on the other hand scored a 9-3, 9-2, 6-9, 9-1 win over Muhammad Wasim.
Muhammad Ali then thumped Awais Amin 9-3, 9-6, 9-2 to move into the quarters and Farzan crushed Aman Gul 9-1, 9-1, 9-5. Later Bilal Zaman completed the quarterfinal line-up edging out Zahir Shah 10-8, 9-7, 9-3.
Amir Atlas, Shoaib Hassan, Adnan Khan and Shehzad Khan were the under-15s who qualified for the quartefinal stage, all of them winning in straight games.
Fahim Zaman, Basit Samad, Hamza Ahmed and Naveed Alam were the others who earned the right to play the quarterfinals. Apart from Basit who was extended to four games, all others won in straight games.
In the under-13s competition, Waqar Mehboob, Asif Khan, Owais Rahim and Aqib Ahmed booked their berths in the last eight as did Owais Khan, Mahad Javed, Danish Atlas, and Muhammad Ali Ayub.
