Keen Winner fancied to win Defence Day Cup

By Ali Kabir

KARACHI, Sept 5: The Defence Day Cup to be run over seven furlongs will be the star attraction of the Karachi Gymkhana races which will be held on Saturday at the local turf.

The first race will begin at 1 p.m.

Eight horses will march to the seven furlong post to vie for top honours where competition will be missing as most of the runners will not relish the journey barring Charkh Bareen, Gambling Girl and Keen Winner.

The former will be carrying crushing weight of 9-9, therefore, looks out of contention. Gambling Girl is cut above class but did not have any fast work-out in the last week which means she is not hundred per cent fit for top flight.

This leaves Keen Winner to complete hat trick Gambling Girl despite not being in the pink of condition should however, have no problem in having the better of the rest as she would relish the journey most.

The club management has failed to draw a more attractive cards for the day as races for lower divisions are being dropped for unknown reasons though there are quite big entries.

This deprives small owners of having any chance of winning stakes though they have to feed their charges. Maintenance of a horse these days costs around Rs 10,000/- and if the owners who own half bred or not highly bred horses have no chance of earning money through racing.

If the club management cannot increase the number of races as they are almost two hours late in conducting weekly races then the scheduled time, they should either improve their efficiency or hold the Gymkahan races in mid week.

This will give club some financial gain and satisfy the owners whose horses are not getting fair deal. The club will not be a loser as the stake money is pooled by the bookmakers.

In the opener, Deniro, Mahasagar and Stable Mates, Your Honour and Ever Shine are the pick. Your Honour a three-year-old ran a very impressive second last week and on that run should have no difficulty in beating Deniro who has been demoted. Ever Shine should have the better of Maha Sagar who at best can figure on the board.

Thousand Up, is the improving three-year-old and has two wins in his bag. Keeping those runs in mind I would like him to have no difficulty in beating Savero and Grey Boy.

The third race should be quite intriguing as it has some form horses who should provide keen tussle in the home stretch. Power Plus, Ranjha and Snake River are the form horses who have been figuring on the board.

Fast And Furious, a highly bred thoroughbred was withdrawn from the race on Aug 28 after being heavily backed in the betting ring. And since some other owners asked for the withdrawal of their charges, the stewards cancelled the race.

The colt has some brilliant track work to his credit and if he can reproduce his morning track work should have the better of Power Plus and Ranjha. Free Lancer too has been tracking very well therefore can pose a threat to all.

In the fifth race, Strike The Gold, Visitor, Khasul Khas and Roberto Carlos Fan are the pick. Strike the Gold on last Sunday was bumped and interfered in the straight and was lucky to escape any serious injury.

The race was won by his stable mate Keen Winner which was the stable fancy. On that run, I would like him to have no difficulty in beating Visitor who may find the opposition tough.

The sixth race, a term race for two year olds has eight runners who will make their debut. Of the lot stable mates Fantastic Beauty and Fantastic Love are more advanced than their rivals therefore should finish ahead of the rest in the same order.

In the concluding event of the day, Snake Eyed, Ray Of Light, Departure on Time and Wonderful Peace draw the attention most.

The last run of Snake Eyed behind Visitor showed that he is in superb condition therefore, should have the better of Departure On Time who is some how not running to his potential. Ray Of Light can provide the element of surprise.
