Another Pakistani held in Canada
TORONTO, Sept 3: Canadian authorities have arrested a 21st man in connection to the recent detention of mostly Pakistan-born men as potential national security threats, an immigration official said on Wednesday.
“I can just confirm the arrest ... but I can’t release the name,” said Rejean Cantlon, a spokesman with Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
“Within 48 hours is the first detention review. He is arrested on immigration matters and that will all be revealed at the detention hearing.”
The man was named by local media as Muddasar Awan.
Reports quoting his lawyer said he surrendered himself to immigration authorities on Tuesday after learning of a warrant for his arrest in connection with raids by an anti-terrorism task force on Aug 14.
Awan, who came to Canada three years ago to study computer science, was not at his apartment at the time, media said. His lawyer could not be immediately reached for comment.
The Aug 14 raids netted 18 men of Pakistani origin and an Indian national, who were not charged with any crime. Two of the men have been released on bail after detention review hearings by immigration adjudicators.
Investigators continue to sift through 25 boxes and 30 computers seized during the raids for a possible terrorist connection.
