Unbeaten Rainbow capture weekly title


KARACHI, Sept 2: Rainbow with five straight victories and an impressive score of 102 Victory Points (VPs) grabbed the weekly bridge title, says a news release issued Tuesday.

Rainbow comprising A.K. Bhurgri Mustafa Saif, Iqbal Abidi and Yousuf Gheewala produced excellent form to win the contest.

Rainbow defeated Chandna 22-8, Arzoo 20-10, Babar 19-11, Mushahid 22-8 and Maqbool 19-11 in the last round.

Mushahid’s team also showed excellent hands to finish second. The team comprising F.A. Naeem, Khurshid Zaki, Mehmood Siqqiqui and Mushahid in the pivotal role first accounted for Sprinters 23-7 then outplayed Baber 22-8. Four Bidders were their next victim losing 15-5 but EFU punished their aggression and won 22-8. They lost another match 12-18 in the last round to Arzoo.

Arzoo secured third spot with a score of 86 VPs, winning four matches from Lipton 20-10, Mixed 17-13, EFU 21-9 and Mushahid 18-12 losing first round match to Four Bidders 10-20.

Earlier in the Pairs event, it was a full house. Thirty- six pairs were placed equally in two houses.

In senior’s section. It was a very close finish between Dr.Hasan-Maqbool Mubashir Pari-Shahab and Ghufran Ashraf- Khalid Mohiuddin.

These three pairs were separated by hairline difference in the same order. They scored 58-83%,58.33% and 57.90%.

In the second house, Saleem Ahmed-Syed Ameer Hasan scored 59.68% for the top berth followed by Dr. Qavi- Dr.Shehla Qavi 58.60% and Dr. Quddos-Shabbir Hasan 55.68%.

In the meantime Karachi Club will host its annual programme-Karachi club Open Pairs Championship next weekend.

The qualifying round will be played on Sunday (Sept. 7). The programme will commence at 11.00 A.M. The final round will be played on Tuesday next at the same venue.

Pakistan Bridge Federation’s regular monthly event will be held on September 13 at Aslam Bridge Hall, National Stadium. The event is being held in honour of Javed Khaled, a fine player from Potohar.—APP
