GILGIT, Sept 2: The Northern Areas Education Department (NAED) on Monday issued notices to at least two associate professors and three assistant professors of the Karakuram International University (KIU) Gilgit for illegally drawing salaries from the budget of the Northern Areas Education Department, informed sources said.

The sources said that these professors were former employees of the now defunct Postgraduate College Gilgit (PCG) who joined the KIU in May and since then were rendering their services but drawing salaries from the fund of the education department.

Those to whom notices have been issued include Mir Ahmed Khan, a former associate professor, Shahid Ali, a former associate professor of the Degree College Skardu, Karim Khan, a former assistant professor of the PCG, Manzoor Ali, a former assistant professor of the PCG and two former assistant professors of the PCG Manzoor Karim and Amjad Ali.

The Northern Areas Education Department would arrange a separate administration till December on the premises of the KIU for over 50 faculty members of the defunct PCG who did not opt to join the KIU despite a job offer extended to them by the KIU, the sources said.

STUDENT LEADER HELD: Police arrested former president of Baltistan Students Federation (BSF) Haider Shah Rizvi here on Monday on the Gilgit Court premises after the Northern Areas Chief Court (NACC) cancelled his bail, official sources said.

Mr Rizvi is accused of delivering seditious statements against Pakistani leaders, including the founder of Pakistan Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Allama Iqbal.

He is also accused of making foul remarks about the national identity card issued to the people of Gilgit and Baltistan during a large public rally.

Mr Rizvi had surrendered himself to the police in January 2003 after absconding for two months. He managed to obtain bail from the districts and sessions judge Gilgit in April 2003, but the NA administration moved the Northern Areas Chief Court for cancellation of his bail for which Sept 1 was fixed as hearing date. After hearing arguments of both sides, the NACC chairman Justice Muzaffar H Malik pronounced cancellation of his bail.

protest postponed: The Shia community in Gilgit and Baltistan regions has delayed the strike against controversies in syllabi, official sources said.

They said a seven-member delegation led by Northern Areas Deputy Chief Executive Fida Muhammad Nashad and Agha Ziauddin Rizvi, including regional cabinet advisers Imran Nadeem and Sheikh Ghulam Haider, had already camped out at Islamabad to negotiate the issue with Northern Areas Chief Executive Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao and Federal Education Minister Zobaida Jalal.

“The negotiations are hopefully productive and the Shia leaders are convinced to postponed the strike in Gilgit and Baltistan till Sept 8, as the final round of the talks will be held with the prime minister within days,” the sources said.

Protests over the issue of syllabi in the Northern Areas have continued for the last three years and they turned violent recently in Skardu town and Gilgit resulting in the damage of public and private property on a large scale.
