LAHORE, Aug 31: Five-wicket burst by medium-pacer Wahab Riaz forced Rawalpindi to follow-on against Lahore on a thrilling third day of their Inter-region (Under-19) cricket tournament match at the LCCA Ground on Sunday.
Wahab took five for 32 to justify his captain’s stunning decision of making the declaration of first innings at 263 for seven in 76 overs, after resuming at 229 for six in the morning.
Wahab with his pace and guile did not allow any Rawalpindi batsman to settle down as they were bundled out for 83 in 41.5 overs to follow-on.
Two other main strike bowlers Jamshed Ahmed and Muhammad Shahzad ably supported Wahab to fold Rawalpindi innings quickly with taking two wickets each for 23 and 27 runs.
Rawalpindi in the second innings were in better position as they saw off the day at 98 for one. Imran Fazal lost the wicket to Jamshed after a splendid 154-ball knock of 67 balls. Waqas Zafar (26) and night-watch man Kashif Bashir, yet to open his account, will resume the innings on Monday, the last day of the match.
At Jinnah Stadium, Sialkot, the home team had gained a massive 204-run lead against Multan.
Sialkot resumed the day at 44-2 and were all out for 352 in 56.4 overs while replying to Multan’s meagre total of 149.
Arslan Anwar who missed a deserving century by one run short off 145 balls with Nawaz Sardar (79) made the big lead of Sialkot possible. Both, Arslan and Nawaz collected 162-run in 134 minutes lasted sixth wicket stand.
