Blackburn burst Chelsea bubble

LONDON, Aug 30: Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, the big-spending London club dropping their first points of the English Premier League season.

Blackburn took a shock lead after only 19 seconds through striker Andy Cole but Romanian forward Adrian Mutu equalised for the hosts on the stroke of halftime.

Cole struck again from close range on the hour following a mistake by Chelsea goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini, only for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink to level from the penalty spot.

Newcastle United’s miserable week continued when they lost 1-0 at home to Birmingham City, Mark Viduka’s late goal helped Leeds United edge out Middlesbrough 3-2 and Fulham won 3-0 at London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Wolverhampton Wanderers drew 0-0 with Portsmouth, Colombian striker Juan Pablo Angel scored twice to help Aston Villa to a 3-1 victory over Leicester City and Bolton Wanderers drew 0-0 with Charlton Athletic.

Liverpool beat local rivals Everton 3-0 in the early kickoff at Goodison Park, England striker Michael Owen scoring twice to help his side to their first victory of the season.
