Bomb blast derails Assam train

Published August 26, 2003

NEW DELHI, Aug 25: A powerful bomb blast derailed 14 carriages of a cargo train in Assam on Monday, but there were no casualties.

The attack came within hours of the bomb explosions in Mumbai.

None of Assam’s ethnic or tribal guerilla groups claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred in the oil-rich state’s troubled Tinsukia district.

Assam is wracked by various insurgencies, whose demands range from separate homelands to greater autonomy for the region’s tribal regions. —AFP
