SRINAGAR, Aug 25: Eleven people were killed in the latest violence in Kashmir, including a family of three whose throats were slit and three Indian soldiers, police said on Monday.

Suspected militants slit the throats of three members of a Muslim family in the village of Kattar Mal in southern Rajouri district overnight, a police spokesman said.

He identified the three as Mohammed Akbar, 60, his wife Hakim Bi, 50, and their daughter-in-law Zeenat Begum, 32.

“The motive of the killing was not immediately known,” he said.

Three Indian soldiers were killed and two others injured in an ambush by rebels in the same district overnight, police said.

One militant and one troop were also killed overnight on Line of Control in the northern Baramulla district in what police said was a rebel bid to infiltrate into Indian Kashmir.

Elsewhere, militants shot dead a civilian in northern Kupwara district and troops killed two rebels in southern Doda, police said.

The insurgency-torn province is expected to host Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on Wednesday for a meeting of the chief ministers of all of India’s 28 states.

There was no indication whether Vajpayee would delay the meeting in the wake of car bombings Monday in India’s commercial hub Bombay.

Separately, troops claimed they rescued overnight seven boys under age 15 who were to be taken to Pakistani territory for arms training.—AFP
