LONG ISLAND (New York), Aug 25: Thailand’s Paradorn Srichaphan retained his TD Waterhouse Cup title in convincing fashion on Sunday, beating American James Blake 6-2 6-4 in the final.
Paradorn, who had lost to Blake in their three previous meetings, became the fifth repeat winner of the event to give himself a timely confidence boost for the U.S. Open, which starts on Monday in New York.
American Blake was broken twice in the opening set and was never able to get back into the match.
Paradorn, who needed just 57 minutes to dispose of Germany’s Nicolas Kiefer in Saturday’s semifinal, earned $52,000 for his title, lifting his 2003 winnings to $510,257.—Reuters
