HYDERABAD: Rain leads to suspension of power supply in Sindh

HYDERABAD, Aug 25: The performance of the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company was exposed on Monday as heavy rains whipped the district and other parts of lower Sindh.
The power supply to the majority of city areas was suspended with the first drop of the rain that broke the heat spell. Complaints of non-supply of power were received from different areas.
The downpour continued for 30 minutes and resulted in inundating the main roads of Hyderabad and Latifabad which were already damaged by the recent rains. The rainwater also accumulated in potholes, making driving risky on the roads.
In several areas, rainwater mixed with overflowing sewage.
The power supply, which was cut due to the tripping of feeders in different sub-divisions, was restored to different areas in the afternoon and evening.
SANGHAR: Sanghar and Khipro received light rain which disrupted the power supply to the area and inundated standing crops.
MIRPURKHAS: Heavy rain lashed the district on Monday, resulting in accumulation of water in low-lying areas and on the main roads.
Standing crops of sugarcane, cotton and chili were also affected.
The rain started in the morning and continued intermittently for four hours.
The power supply remained cut following the rain and business activities were also suspended as bazaars and shopping centres were closed.
The Jamrao Canal was overflowing as its connected waterways were closed.
Irrigation department officials visited the site to control the situation created after the closure of watercourses and heavy rains.
The power supply was restored after eight hours.
MITHI: Rain, strong winds and thunderstorm hit the Tharparkar district on Sunday night and Monday.
The rain started at about 8:30pm in Mithi and continued intermittently till Monday morning.
Low-lying areas in the town were submerged with rainwater, making the civic life miserable.
Birds perched on trees fell down and died due to heavy winds and continuous downpour.
Most of the areas of Nagarparkar and Diplo talukas received rain.
Growers of Chhachhro and Nagarparkar talukas are expecting good crops as the areas have received light rains.
However, heavy rains damaged crops in Diplo and Mithi talukas and hundreds of mud houses. A large number of cattlehead also perished in the rain.
Talking to this correspondent on Monday, Khet Singh Bhati, Ramsingh, Son Singh and other residents of the Diplo taluka said though they had managed to re-cultivate their lands but most of the fields in Nanjhthi, Jhun and other dehs had come under rainwater and the crops were destroyed.
Meanwhile, a visit to different villages of the Mithi taluka revealed that crops were badly damaged in these areas.
Area growers appealed to the government to write off ADBP loans and provide them with interest-free small loans.
