KARACHI: Leftists urged to unite against imperialism

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Aug 24: Speakers at a meeting called for unity among left-oriented parties to fight imperialism.

Describing the new world order as a form of neo-colonialism being imposed by the US, they said the superpower wanted to subjugate underdeveloping countries economically and politically in the name of globalization.

The speakers urged the progressive forces of the country to shun their differences and struggle against the aggressive policies of US imperialism.

They were of the view that under the present circumstances no single party was in a position to fight pro-imperialism and anti-people forces who had been exploiting the people of Pakistan. They suggested formation of a broad-based left party committed to working for a democratic society in the country.

The meeting was held at the PMA House to condole the death of National Workers Party leader Comrade Fasihuddin Salar, known for his Marxist leanings.

Organized by the Karachi chapter of the party, the meeting was presided over by NWP chief Abid Hasan Manto. It was addressed by political leaders as well as intellectuals.

Prominent among them included Mairaj Mohammad Khan, Hasil Khan Bizenjo of the Balochistan National Democratic Party, Karamat Butt of the Qaumi Jamhoori Party, Amin Khattak of the National Awami Party, KPC president Sabihuddin Ghousi, A.R Arif of the Mazdoor Kissan Party, Hasan Abidi, Anwar Ahsan Siddiqui, Najamul Hasan Ata and others.

Paying tributes to the late Marxist leader, the speakers lauded his role in the progressive movement of the country, saying that as a Marxist he contributed a lot to the struggle of the downtrodden against their oppressors.

Describing the late leader as a multi-dimensional personality, a man of commitment who fought for establishment of an egalitarian society, they said he was not only a thinker but a trade union leader and political activist who was respected by all leftist factions.

The meeting was largely attended by political activists trade union leaders, NGO activists, intellectuals, writers and poets. The family members of the late leader were also present on the occasion.
