11 killed in Kashmir violence

JAMMU, Aug 23: Eight Mujahideen and three Indian security force personnel were killed in separate incidents of violence in occupied Kashmir overnight and on Saturday, an Indian defence spokesman said.

Six freedom fighters were killed in the Mendhar region of Poonch district when they were trying to cross border with Pakistan, Lt-Col B.S. Rathore said.

Two Indian soldiers were killed as they fought the Mujahideen, officials said. In another encounter, a freedom fighter was killed at Markote area of Poonch district while one policeman was killed in a separate encounter with Mujahideen in Udhampure, the spokesman said.

Another militant was killed in an encounter in Salar area of Pahelgam district.—AFP
