Your Opinion tipped for repeat performance

By Ali Kabir

KARACHI, Aug 23: A card of seven races has been drawn for the Karachi Gymkhana races which will be held today (Sunday) at the local turf. The first race will begin at 1 p.m.

The stand off between the Managing Committee of the Karachi Race Club and the bookmakers was resolved and as a result, fresh handicaps were declared on Saturday morning and the final acceptors were declared in the afternoon which showed entry of most of the horses which were withdrawn on the Independence Day.

The bookmakers proved their point as the ban imposed on the horses which were withdrawn at the last moment on Aug 14 was lifted and the Managing Committee of the KRC had to cut a sorry figure as the fines were also waived.

It was on the insistence of the bookmakers that on Aug 10 race on Visitor was fixed and the most prospective runner, Shane Bond was not allowed to run on merit despite the fact that the bookmakers had informed the Managing Committee of some foul play.

The ban on Shane Bond has not been lifted which proved beyond doubt that the members of the Managing Committee confessed their involvement, which has no precedence in the history of Pakistan racing.

As a result of peace returning to the track big fields are there in almost every race and if racing is conducted without any cloud the days proceedings should be very contesting.

In the opener, silver City, Darbari Malang, Noor-un-Nisa, Major Dandy and Powerful Tarzan are the chance horses but Silver City to have an edge over others on his last run when he finished second behind Bye Bye.

Your Opinion and Thousand Up should renew their week old rival in the second race and I do not see any reason why Your Opinion should not come out with a repeat performance and is my days best bet.

In the third race Knight Gambler, Mahasagar and Grey Boy are the form horses. On last run on Independence Day Mahasagar will be the public fancy but it is doubtful that he will be able to humble Knight Gambler who was withdrawn. Mahasagar’s run was not at all impressive. He had won just because he was fastest of the lot. Grey Boy on handicap can upset my calculations and would be a safe place bet.

Auzy, Knight Gambler, Power Plus and Your Pleasure draw the attention from among 18 runners who will view for top honours in the fourth race.

Power Plus had a most convincing win in his last outing. On that run he should have no difficulty in making it two in a row.

Your Pleasure could have been a potential threat to him but the same day in the same company he had run out of frame so one cannot expect total reversal of form, therefore Auzy and Knight Fighter should fight for lower berths.

In the fifth race Rajwar and Neelam Taab should renew their rivalry. Last time Rajwar’s handling by his rider was suspect. With that run in mind he should have the better of Neelam Taab who will be carrying 9-2 on his back.

Satellite Star and Departure On Time are the pick in the sixth race. The former on his last run behind Visitor, a much improved three-year-old will come in for heavy support in the betteing ring but I have my own doubt if he will be able to humble Departure On Time who will be chicken in weight and was beaten by Visitor with 9-0 on his back. If handicapping is any guide Departure on Time should practically hack the field.

In the concluding event of the day which also has 18 runners Dont Panick, Visitor, Khasul Khas, and Mega Hit are the form horses. Dont Panick’s lasr behind Edging Ahead in the August Cup did not impress me as the filly failed to show any response in the staright and was humbled by Edging Ahead.

On that run I have my own doubts that she will be able to have edge over Visitor who will be going over six furlongs for the first time. Visitor has showed improvement with every outing whereas Dont Panick has not showed much improvement recently.
