KARACHI, Aug 21: A meeting of the provincial peace committee comprising Ulema from all schools of thought has condemned the recent cycle of violence and killings in Karachi which claimed a number of lives.
The meeting was held here on Thursday with Sindh minister for Auqaf and religious affairs, Irfan Gul Magsi in the chair. It was decided that Ulema would visit every nook and cranny of the province to promote religious harmony, tolerance and peace.
Prominent among those who attended the meeting were senator Abbas Kameeli, Maulana Aun Mohammad Naqvi, Syed Ali Abbas Kazmi, Iftikhar Ahmad Bhatti, Pir Ayub Jan Sarhandi, secretary Zakat and Auqaf Fasihuddin Siddiqui, additional home secretary Aga Jan Akhtar and DIG operations Tariq Jameel.
Briefing newsmen about the decisions taken during the meeting, Mr Magsi said that in case of any future act of terrorism, Ulema from the peace committee would approach the affected place to impress upon people the need to control their sentiments and not to get carried away.
“Besides, they will also be urged to maintain unity in their ranks to foil the evil designs of the forces inimical to their cohesion,” he added.
The minister said the provincial committee would also establish committees at district, taluka and union council levels with the objective of restoring peace and maintaining harmony among different communities inhabiting the province. He further said Ulema would also utilize services of TV channels for effective propagation of their peace messages to the masses.
He informed that the committee would also play its role in solving matters regarding control of mosques and a subcommittee would be formed for the purpose.
He said Ulema from all schools of thought had condemned the heinous murder of Dr Ibne Hasan gunned down in Malir, and they clearly perceived it as an act of terrorism.
Later, replying to newsmen’s queries, a member of the committee, senator Abbas Akmeeli, said that generally people from both the sects did not believe in violence. ‘Rather it is a ‘third element’ involved in killing innocent people’, he added.—PPI
