LAHORE, Aug 20: Four members of a nomad family were killed while three others suffered injuries in an accident on the Ravi Road, Shahdara Town, on Wednesday.
Police said a traffic policeman signalled a truck to stop at the Batti Chowk when it violated one-way traffic. Its driver, however, accelerated the speed making the policeman chase it.
As the driver lost control over the rashly-driven truck, it overturned while taking a turn and fell on a donkey-cart. Seven people on the cart were buried under the heavy vehicle.
Passers-by started the rescue operation in company with police force called at the site. All the seven people were unconscious with critical injuries when retrieved from the wreckage.
The injured were taken to the nearest hospital where Noor Bibi, 45, Muhammad Sadiq, 40, Maqbool Ahmad, 19 and Amir Ali, 21, were pronounced dead. The others, Abid, Hameed and Yousaf, were stated to be in critical condition till last reports came in.
The bodies were returned to the family without autopsy.
Truck Driver Amjad Ali and helper Muhammad Usman were taken into custody by the police, and a case was registered against them.
Meanwhile, a youngster, identified as Muhammad Latif, (22) was on his way home when a bus hit his motorcycle on the Lahore Road at Raiwind City.
Latif suffered critical injuries and died at a hospital. His body was returned to his family without autopsy.
The police claimed to have impounded the bus and registered a case against the absconding driver.
