Magical spell by Mushtaq


LONDON, Aug 18: Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed clinched a match haul off 11 wickets and took his season’s tally to 82 victims as Sussex pulled off a 252-run win against Lancashire in the county championship at Hove on Sunday.

Mushtaq grabbed five of the last six wickets on a slow turning pitch to maintain Sussex’s hopes of clinching their first-ever title with four matches remaining.

Mushtaq, who had also featured with the bat in his side’s first innings score of 385, finished with 5-49 to follow his earlier analysis of 6-124 as Lancashire were dismissed for 377.

Division One:

At Hove: Sussex beat Lancashire by 252 runs.

Sussex 385 (C.J. Adams 140, R.R. Montgomerie 72, Mushtaq Ahmed 60) and 265-3 declared (C.J. Adams 147 not out, R.R. Montgomerie 70); Lancashire 377 (S.G. Law 96, M.J. Chilton 65, G. Chapple 54; Mushtaq Ahmed 6-124) and 139 (Mushtaq Ahmed 5-49, B. Taylor 4-42).

Division Two:

At Taunton: Somerset drew with Northamptonshire.

Somerset 476 (I.D. Blackwell 140, A. Laraman 70, P. Jones 63) and 292-4 (M. Wood 100, J. Cox 64); Northamptonshire 681-5 dec (M.E.K. Hussey 331 not out, D.J.G. Sales 125, T. Bailey 101 not out).
